Singapore Strait An Early 2025 Hotspot For Ship Piracy

Incidents of piracy and armed robberies worldwide against ships jumped 50% to a five-year high in the first half of 2025. Data show that nearly two-thirds of the acts occurred around the Singapore Strait.
Other regions remained calm overall, with only a few piracy incidents reported. But nearly one-third of global trade flows through the Singapore Strait.
Notably, 90% of the incidents recorded in the first six months of 2025 involved pirates boarding the harassed vessels.
“The boarding of large vessels exceeding 150,000 dwt in this narrow and congested waterway remains a significant concern, particularly given the 95% success rate of boardings in the Singapore Strait,” the International Maritime Bureau wrote in a report.
Most of the recent cases involved pirates seizing spare engine parts.
