Cyber Threats at Ports Highlight of New NATO Brief

A number of cyber attacks affecting port facilities have been traced back to threat actors originating from Russia, Iran, and China, NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence (CCDCOE) found.
According to the CCDCOE report, the attacks focused on access control systems and vessel traffic management systems.
Bad actors are drawn to the ports because of their civil-military divide: most ports are privately owned, but they also often service military ships.
Reforms recommended by the CCDCOE include updating NATO’s maritime strategy, boosting intelligence-sharing, and embedding cyber training in NATO exercises.
