Maritime Casualties Up As Fleet Aging Continues

As the global fleet continues to age, maritime casualty incidents have increased, up 42% from 2018 to 2024; the number of ships increased just 10% in that time.

Several factors are causing shipowners to continue to operate aging vessels, including record-high container freight rates in 2024 and uncertainty surrounding new emissions regulations by the IMO and the EU.

“As freight rates surged in a ton-miles driven market,” said DNV Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, “many shipowners delayed scrapping older vessels, which put seafarers, cargo and the environment at greater risk.”

DNV suggested shipowners can mitigate casualties on older vessels by increasing maintenance schedules and equipment upgrades.
