Fuel Quality Failures Spike in Late 2025, FOBAS Reports

Lloyd’s Register’s FOBAS (Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service) has reported a notable increase in marine fuel quality failures toward the end of 2025, raising concerns for ship operators and charterers. The advisory highlights a surge in off-specification fuel samples, particularly in relation to chemical contamination and stability issues that can impact engine performance and operational safety.
According to the report, certain ports and supply regions experienced elevated instances of problematic fuel batches, underscoring the importance of rigorous bunker testing and supplier vetting. Fuel quality failures can result in engine damage, increased maintenance costs, delays, and potential contractual disputes — all of which carry direct supply chain implications.
FOBAS recommends enhanced due diligence, including pre-delivery testing, careful review of bunker delivery notes, and onboard monitoring of fuel behavior following bunkering. Early detection and proactive management remain critical in minimizing operational disruption and protecting machinery.
For operators, the advisory reinforces the importance of integrating fuel risk assessment into voyage planning and procurement strategies. In a tightening regulatory environment, ensuring fuel integrity is not only a technical necessity but also a commercial safeguard that supports schedule reliability and asset protection.
