1st UN Treaty to Protect Oceanic Life Ratified

The United Nations on 19 September ratified an oceanic biodiversity treaty which addresses conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources. The treaty will take effect in January.
The UN’s High Seas Treaty provides a legal framework to establish marine protected areas, regulate activities such as deep-sea mining, and manage the sharing of benefits from marine genetic resources in international waters.
But while the 60 countries that are needed to ratify the accord have been secured, its effectiveness is tenuous, as some of the world’s biggest players — China, Japan, the U.S. and Russia — have not ratified the measure.
More than 60% of the ocean is beyond any nation’s jurisdiction.
