Mixed Reactions Follow IMO's Net Zero Vote Delay

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) scheduled vote on the Global Shipping Net Zero-Framework vote has been delayed by one year after a 57-49 vote in favor of postponement took its place on October 17th.
The motion, introduced by Saudia Arabia, was supported by several nations including, the United States and Russia, who have both vocally opposed the framework. The current U.S. President criticized the proposal calling it “a Green New Scam”. The delayed vote could also push back any potential enforcement timeline as well.
While strong geopolitical opposition aims to dismantle the framework entirely, key industry representatives including the International Chamber of Shipping, and INTERTCARGO have expressed their interest in working closely with the IMO to develop a constructive and workable industry standard moving forward.
Environmental organizations, meanwhile, have expressed concerns about delaying the launch of the framework, raising questions about the industry’s commitment to climate targets and warning that the delay undermines the progress toward the 2050 net-zero emissions goal.
Unsurprisingly, the IMO’s Secretary-General of the Organization, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez who stands behind the framework, met the outcome with disappointment stating “It is the time to really look back at how we have approached this meeting. My plea to you is not to repeat the way we have approached this meeting for future discussions.”
Most shipping lines and ship owners have thus far stayed silent on the subject.
