Pollution at Ports Tied to More Than Just Ship Traffic

Public Relations

While other ports see more vessel traffic, a new report shows that the Port of Shanghai recorded the world’s highest levels of greenhouse gas emissions, indicating that vessel numbers alone don’t determine emission levels.

“This report reveals the complex relationship between port activity and emissions,” said Constantine Komodromos, chief executive and founder of VesselBot. “Our data shows that while more vessels generally mean more emissions, performance and operational efficiency are critical mitigating factors.”

Another study by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology determined that if the emissions levels from the vessel practice of sailing fast and then waiting is reduced by 1%, about 400 premature deaths could be avoided worldwide.

According to the study, eliminating the practice of sailing fast then waiting could prevent more than 10,000 premature deaths every year.
