GPS Interference Surges for Ships in Middle East Following Israel Attack on Iran

The navigation systems of commercial ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz increasingly have faced electronic interference since Israel’s assault of Iran on June 13.

The interference compounds ships’ ability to travel the strait without experiencing an accident or other undesired navigation.

“We have reports,” said BIMCO Chief Safety and Security Officer Jakob Larsen, “that more ship owners are now exercising extra caution and are opting to stay away from the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.”

The Britannia P&I Club issued guidance to vessels whose Global Navigation Satellite Systems are disrupted. Among them: Navigate cautiously, as nearby ships also might be affected by GNSS disruption.
